Beginner’s Workout.
I am glad to be training properly. Winstina (my running buddy) and I are halfway through the first week of the beginner’s workout. We are running for two minutes, walking for three minutes and performing five cycles of this. It helps to have someone who has been running longer than I have. She has a timer (which I’ve discovered is a necessity), she sets the pace and reminds me to breathe, firm up my core, and raise my thighs while I am running. Consequently I’ve discovered through those short minutes of running that I do not have good posture and do not breathe properly. How could I have missed this all this time? Its shocking really. I now find myself sitting properly and asking periodically, “am I breathing?” Most of all though, I cannot wait until I can run around the park once without stopping. That would be a really good day.

I have a running partner!!!
Today I met someone who is close to my age, praticing for a marathon, and… lives three blocks away from me. I told her about the Self-Transcendence Marathon and she is going to sign up for it so we can run together. Bonzai!!! I’ve hit the Jackpot, a marathon partner. We are going to start running tomorrow. Tonight I am reading The Complete Book of Running, edited by Amby Burfoot (and recommended by her) in preparation for our goals. I am so exicited. I love how runners are doers not watchers don’t you?

Self Transcendence Marathon
I signed up for a marathon today. Its titled The Self-Transcendence Marathon pioneered by Sri Chinmoy to be held on August 25th, 2009 in Nyack, NY. I knew nothing about it until I started researching marathonguides.com. I filled out a small stub and a check, inserted both in an addressed and stamped envelope and walla, I’m scheduled for a marathon. One part of me thinks, ‘You must be Mad!’ the other part of me thinks ‘This will be a confidence building event that will only benefit me rather than hurt me.’ I am exicited and scared. I am scared of the ice baths I’m supposed to take after running a number of miles, I’m scared of getting hurt, injured, or not giving my body proper nutrition because I have added training for a marathon to living on a vegan diet… I’ve also just realized that I am scared to die of a heart attack due to lack of proper dieting and exercise. I am scared of waking up one day with difficutly breathing because my immobility has caused a lot of fat to choke my internal organs. I am scared of not realizing my body’s potential. I think the former and all its unplesantries is preferable. My beginner runner training starts tomorrow. Today I rest.

Happy Sunday.
I woke up this morning and my body felt good, like it was ready for some exercise. In fact, if I didn’t know better I’d say it was anxious for it… Weird. The weather was suprisingly warm outside. It’s supposed to get into the upper fifties today. I went out walking for half an hour and was very proud that I woke up to do it. I also felt inspired by comments made by Shebalynnx and Brad Hefta-Gaub (thanks guys) it really fueled me to keep on track. I am looking forward another trip outdoors tomorrow, it was nice to catch the sun as it was rising.

Starting out.
So, I’m done with the talking and the planning. Now is the time to JUST DO IT! Today before sundown I will walk and jog for half an hour. I will not care who is on the street, who may be laughing at me or how cold it is outside. I will run.
